North Sikkim

Phodong Monastery
This is one of the major monasteries of Sikkim belonging to the Karmapa sub-sect of Kagyupa monastery. Beautiful Murals adorn the walls of this monastery.

 

Labrang Monastery
The Labrang Monastery was built about 100 years ago. It belongs to the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The name translates as ?dwelling place of the Lamas.

 

Phensong Monastery
Situated on a gentle slope between Kabi and Phodong, this monastery is surrounded by beautiful landscapes. It belongs to the Nyingmapa order and was built during the reign of Jigme Pawo.

 

Singhik
It is a destination where one can take a glorious view of Mount Khangchendzonga and its neighboring peaks. A half-hour trek up hills takes you to an ancient monastery.

 

Chungthang
It is a small town at the confluence of Lachen and Lachung rivers. Legend has it that Chungthang was the meeting place of Guru Rimpoche and Lepcha Chieftain Tetong Tek.

 

Lachung
Lachung is a small town with scattered settlements, dominated mostly by the Bhutias. An army canto--nment stands here.

 
The Lingdum Monastery (Ranka Monastery)
Ranka Monastery, which is situated on the Rumtek - Ranka - Gangtok road at Lingdum; about 45 minutes drive from Gangtok. The Lingdum Monastery is the seat of Zurmang Charwang Rimpoche. The present Gharwang Rimpoche is the12th successive incarnation of this lineage. Also known as Pal Zurmang Kagyud Monastery/ Lingdum Monastery and is been established in 2000.
 

Lachen
Lachen is situated at an altitude of 2750 mtrs. and about 6 hrs. drive from Gangtok. The Lachen Monastery Located on top of the village commands a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and country side. Resorts, hotels and lodges are available for accommodation.

 

Guru-dongmar lake
Guru-dongmar lake is considered as one of the sacred lakes of this State both by the Buddhist and the Hindus. The lake remains milky in color throughout and it is believed the Guru Padmasambhava had touched the lake whilst he visited Tibet from this area.
